And here are details of the daily routes we might cover:

Very little of this is set in stone and we welcome your comments and suggestions about what not to miss along the way.

Getting ahead of myself here–or ahead of you all any way–but Krumpke’s Donuts (not my choice of spellings) in Hagerstown, WV has doughnuts not to be missed. Bear in mind they are open 7:00pm (yes, pm) till 2:00am Sunday through Friday.

The end of day 3- Do you have a plan as to where you’ll stay? My mother lives about 30 to 40 minutes south of Madison off I-90… Just a thought!

Re: Day 31: Mom wants you to visit her cousin Carolyn (Govie’s sister Irene’s daughter) in Sioux City Iowa to ask her if she has good teeth and if we got them from Govie’s side of the family! My dear friend Louise lives in Redfield Iowa (just west of Des Moines) on a farm where she grew up and is always very welcoming of the Smicks!; also she has a sister and many relatives in Alaska so I’ll send her your blogspot etc in case she can steer you to anyone on your route.

Re: Day 2: cousin Brucie lives in Akron, Ohio. He just called me on Saturday before I came down to see Mom and was arriving in Seattle the next day for a 3 day trip. He loved hearing about your trip…we need to get his email.

I’m in touch with Glenn by e-mail so I’ll get Bruce’s address from him and send it along.

Your’e aware that the Jessie James Bank Museum is just outside of Kansas City in Liberty MO, yes? I’ll remind you as you get closer. In fact, we’ll vet all of Kansas City for you all.

I’m looking forward to joining you on your ride through Oregon. You might want to consider a pit stop in Eugene. You can use my shop and tools for any needed repairs and maintenance.

Victoria’s sister–Marsha(and husband Mike)live in Eugene but it sounds like Cary has you more than covered. But it would seem you all will be going through Lincoln City–I know a restaurant there.

And on to Portland; half of Victoria’s relatives are there. Not to mention Voodoo Doughnuts and Stumptown Coffee.

I think you can capture the essence of Rt 101–cold, windy and wet–long before you might head East to take advantage of a friend in Eugene. In fact Rt 6 around Tilamook (great cheese), heads over to Portland.

I just think this awesome trip should be stretched out a bit, with some extra days (especially after you find the Rockies) just for knocking around. You could, for example, spend some time practicing your parallel parking. You have the days off. You’re already out there. Certain NY lovers with fixed and determined schedules notwithstanding, you should think “once in a lifetime” because that’s what it is until you actually do it again. So make this one chance over-count. You have a Smick Box for over-counting don’t you Peter? Bring it along.

Day three takes you all through Betsy’s old neighborhood (Stevensville, MI) and the best doughnut place in the country–Dale’s Donut Factory.

It’s so cool you’re doing this around the same time there’s a lot of conversation about “Easy Rider” with Dennis Hopper’s too-soon death. Too bad you’re not going through New Orleans! Boy, could I hook you up down there! 🙂

Let me know when you’ll be coming to Wilmington. Parker’s in Chile now but due home July 9th. He’s dying to see you guys.

To all and sundry: Victoria’s idea of following Peter and Sebastion on Google Earth is a free and easy download. And great fun to get sattelite images of where they are and see many photographs of the area posted and indicated by a camera icon.

I read in today’s paper that the Four Corners is closed for construction. Many dissapointed people. But a couple motorcyclists decided they weren’t coming all the way from New Jersey to miss the moment so they crashed the gates. Now; one has to wonder if the similarity between NJ plates and MA plates–especially to people out West who would be less familiar with either–might have led to misidentification of the malefactors.

So where are you all? Sebastian’s recent post suggests you all are in Nebraska. An earlier one from Peter suggests you all must be near home by now.

Either way, I’m anxious to see the tattoos you all got to commemorate your adventure. (There are alot of tattoo places in the MD/De area–the tattoo museum and parlor is in Baltimore).

Speaking of MD; Krumpe’s Doughnuts in Hagerstown opens at 7:00pm–yes, PM.

And finally, if circumstances have you needing a place to stay when you all are in the Ridgefield area, the Thompson’s is available.
