Launch Date: May 23, 2010

February 22, 2010

On or about May 23, Peter and Sebastian intend to launch what may well be an epic journey:  To Alaska and back.  On motorcycles.  That are over 25 years old.  Using bodies whose combined age is 85.

Our trip will take us to 37 states–including the last three that I have never visited– and will cover nearly 13,000 miles.    In the lower 48, we will be as far west as Oregon and Washington, as far south as Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, and will hit just about every state in between.  We will miss only Florida, California, Colorado and the Southwest, and parts of New England.

We’ll be posting our progress, pictures, videos and your comments as we go.

So, stay tuned and wish us luck.

(By the way, It appears that the newest post will appear immediately after this brief intro.)

Hey Pete, I’m a friend of Debby’s in Iowa. And Sebastian I met you the summer of ’06 when you were staying with your aunt. Among other things, I remember having some nice chats with you eating out on the patio – and hearing about your job, etc. while I was there.

If you are passing through Iowa this spring anywhere near Des Moines, let me know. Would be happy to host you guys on our farm thirty miles west of DSM. Deb and Jan have both been here as we did Ragbrai – the bike (as in bicyle) ride across IA!

Let me know – to make sure I’m available (but I can be very flexible as I’m sure you’ll want to be too – so even a last minute call is no problem, providing you find me!. Here is my cell number – (206)947-4644 which is probably the best way to contact me or leave a message.

Sounds like a great trip – and the planning is half the fun, right?!!

Bon voyage! I am all in favor of “just having fun” and I salute you.

When I was in my teens I fantasized about going to Chicken, Alaska because the name just tickled me. My grandfather was a mason, and he traveled to 48 of the 50 states to do decorative plaster work—this included Alaska before it was a state. (He didn’t travel to Hawaii, so one of the great mysteries in my life is figuring out which state he did NOT travel to. Or through.

Joe and I love New Mexico deeply and passionately and I would strongly recommend making a wee bit of a detour through the Rockies. Joe took one of the best rides of his life up from Santa Fe to Durango in Colorado. Amazing roads and amazing views. The land speaks to you, and so do the people. Bandelier National Park—go for one of the night walks. You won’t regret it.
